Stitch Table
The Stitch Table marks the beginning of the Stitch Collection: an exploration of how raw material and structure can coexist without concealment.
The project began with a clear constraint: preserve the irregular edge and natural character of the wood without relying on epoxy or hidden hardware. The solution became the stitched spine; a structural and visual element that binds the slabs together while remaining fully legible.
Rather than hiding the connection, or filling it to make it disappear, the spine asserts itself. Through‑tenons, bridle joints, and precisely placed dowels work together to create both strength and rhythm. Every seam, joint, and transition is intentional. Nothing is ornamental. Nothing is concealed.
The table is built from a single black walnut tree that was milled and air‑dried in the studio over several years. Allowing the material to season naturally produces depth of color and variation that cannot be rushed or replicated. The top is formed from two complementary quarter‑sawn slabs, each over 2 inches thick, selected and oriented so their grain lines mirror one another. Balanced, but not overly controlled.
The base continues the same logic. Book‑matched legs are subtly carved and tapered, joined with full through‑tenons and hand‑cut bridle joints at the aprons. The result is a structure that feels grounded and assured, without visual heaviness.
At 83 inches long, 38–40 inches wide, and 30 inches tall, the Stitch Table carries real presence. It is substantial without excess, contemporary without abandoning the inherent warmth of the material.
This piece is not about refinement through reduction alone, but about clarity—allowing the wood, the structure, and the method of construction to remain visible and honest.
