The Atlas Chair
The Atlas Chair began as a question:
Could a single continuous arc carry the structure, comfort, and visual identity of a chair?
Rather than assembling separate parts, the design explores continuity. One uninterrupted line forms the arms, back, and legs, returning to itself and creating a closed structural loop. The chair reads clearly in profile; calm, grounded, and resolved. Without relying on excess material or visual reinforcement.
Seen from the side, the logic becomes apparent. The arc rises and settles. The legs reach outward and plant with quiet authority. Nothing strains. The structure simply holds.
Each chair is built by hand in my Connecticut studio from solid walnut. The bent-laminated arm and back form the primary structure, while hand-shaped transitions soften the geometry and refine the feel. The upholstered seat and back are set within the frame rather than placed on top of it, allowing the wood to remain visually present while providing a relaxed, supportive sit.
The surface is finished with a hand-rubbed oil that protects the wood while preserving its texture and warmth. The intent is not to polish the material into submission, but to let it remain legible, something that improves through use rather than resisting it.
Atlas is designed to live quietly in a space. It works as a focal point or as part of a larger composition, rewarding attention without demanding it. Like the best furniture, its strength is not in how loudly it announces itself, but in how naturally it holds its place.
